Help & FAQ/Import guides

Export your Zettlr notes

Zettlr works directly on a folder of .md files, so the workspace you already have is the export. Zip it and drop it in.

Zip the workspace

  1. In Zettlr, right-click the workspace at the top of the file tree and choose Show in Finder, or Show in Explorer on Windows.
  2. Right-click the folder there and compress it.
  3. Drop the .zip into the importer.

Zettelkasten links keep their text, not their target

Zettlr links notes by ID, so a link reads [[20260823120000]]. We keep note links exactly as they are written, which means an ID link only resolves here if a note is actually titled with that ID. Links written with the file name resolve normally, so switch your internal link format to the file name before you export if you rely on them.

Citation keys like [@doe2026] are text to us. They come across unchanged and stop being clickable.

What comes across

Workspace subfolders become real folders, at any depth, and the images and files your notes link to come with them. Headings, tables, task lists, code blocks, footnotes, math and highlights all survive. Tags are read from YAML front matter and from #hashtags written in the prose, so a Zettelkasten built on hashtags keeps its filing.

Import into PrivacyNotes

  1. Open PrivacyNotes and go to Settings > Import & Export.
  2. Pick Zettlr as the source.
  3. Drop in the file you just exported, or click to browse.
  4. Check what the preview says will arrive, then start the import.

Still stuck? Ask your AI agent.

You get an answer in seconds instead of waiting for a reply. Your assistant reads all 84 answers and every import guide at once, so it can combine them, follow up on your question, and explain it in your own words. We never see any of it, because we do not run a chatbot.

  1. Copy the prompt.
  2. Paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any other AI assistant.
  3. Ask your question, in your own language.
  4. Keep that chat open. Next time, ask straight away.
