Help & FAQ/Import guides

Import from Bitwarden

PrivacyNotes reads Bitwarden's unencrypted .json export and files everything where it belongs in the Vault: logins, cards, SSH keys, and secure notes.

Export your vault from Bitwarden

  1. Open the Bitwarden web vault (or the desktop app) and sign in.
  2. Go to Tools, then "Export vault".
  3. Choose the file format .json (the plain one, not ".json (Encrypted)").
  4. Confirm with your master password and download the file.

Where things land

Logins become Vault login entries (with their site icons), cards become card entries, SSH keys become SSH key entries, and secure notes plus identities arrive as readable notes. Bitwarden folders map to tags, and favorites arrive starred.

A word of care: the export file holds your passwords in plain text. Import it, verify everything arrived, then delete the file properly. Inside PrivacyNotes it is all end-to-end encrypted again.

Import into PrivacyNotes

  1. Open PrivacyNotes and go to Settings > Import & Export.
  2. Pick Bitwarden as the source.
  3. Drop in the file you just exported (or click to browse) and start the import.
  4. Imported notes arrive tagged with their source, so you can review or bulk-edit the whole batch afterwards.
