# How do the Personal and Work spaces work?

Spaces [split your library into Personal and Work](https://privacynotes.app/help/organize/). The switch beside **Ninja** in the sidebar shows **All**, **Personal** or **Work**: All shows every item, and the other two show one space each. Each device keeps its own choice, so your phone can show Personal while your laptop shows Work, and opening an item from the other space switches to it. Spaces only change what the lists show: every item still syncs to every device.

A top-level folder belongs to one space, with everything inside it, and **Move to Work** or **Move to Personal** in its menu, or in the menu of any item, moves it across. An item in no folder is Personal, and so is anything you create while All is open. To stop using spaces, switch off Settings > Lists > Spaces: every item shows, nothing moves, and each folder keeps its space for when you switch it back on. Spaces need Pro.
