# Export your Standard Notes Standard Notes offers a decrypted backup export, and that is the file PrivacyNotes reads. One important detail up front: it must be the decrypted variant, not the encrypted one. ## Export your notes from Standard Notes 1. Open Standard Notes (web at app.standardnotes.com, or the desktop app) and sign in. 2. Open Preferences, then the Backups section. 3. Download a data backup and choose the decrypted format when asked. 4. You get a .zip containing a file named "Standard Notes Backup and Import File.txt". Keep the zip as it is. ## Encrypted backups are not supported An encrypted Standard Notes backup is ciphertext that only your Standard Notes password can open, so the importer cannot read it. If you exported the encrypted variant, export again and pick decrypted. Since the file contains your notes in plain text, delete it after the import is done. Drop the whole .zip into the importer, or just the .txt file if you already unzipped it. ## Import into PrivacyNotes 1. Open PrivacyNotes and go to Settings > Import & Export. 2. Pick **Standard Notes** as the source. 3. Drop in the file you just exported, or click to browse. 4. Check what the preview says will arrive, then start the import. --- Source: https://privacynotes.app/help/import/standard-notes
