# Export your Joplin notes Joplin exports every notebook at once as one JEX file. It brings your notes across with their notebooks, tags, to-dos, note links, and attachments. ## Export everything as JEX Tools > Create backup writes the same file, byte for byte, as all_notebooks.jex inside a JoplinBackup folder in your home folder. If Joplin already makes those backups for you, the newest one works just as well. 1. Open Joplin on your computer. 2. Choose File > Export all > "JEX - Joplin Export File". 3. Save the file. You get one .jex file that holds every notebook, so there is nothing to zip. 4. Drop that .jex in as it is. ## Pick JEX, not Markdown, HTML or PDF Export all also offers MD, MD + Front Matter, HTML directory and PDF. Those are copies made for reading in other apps. The JEX file is Joplin's own record of every note, notebook, tag and attachment, and it is the one we read. Drop one of the other exports in and we will say so rather than import half of it. If you already exported "RAW - Joplin Export Directory", zip that folder and drop the zip in. It holds the same items as the JEX file. ## Take notes out of the trash before you export Joplin leaves the trash out of every export and every backup. Move any note you want to keep out of the trash before you export, or it stays behind in Joplin. ## What comes along Your notebooks are rebuilt as real folders, nested as deep as Joplin nested them, and every note keeps its tags and the created and updated dates Joplin showed you. [To-dos become task notes](https://privacynotes.app/help/tasks/) with a checkbox you can tick off, already ticked when the to-do was done, and a due date stays written beside the title. [Links between notes become note-links](https://privacynotes.app/help/note-links/). Images and attachments are imported into your storage and stay in place in the note. Notes saved as HTML, such as many web clips, are converted with their formatting. Notes from Joplin's Conflicts notebook arrive tagged "conflict", so you can find and sort them. If you use Joplin's encryption, let it finish decrypting before you export: an item that is still encrypted is skipped, and the import preview tells you how many. ## Import into PrivacyNotes 1. Open PrivacyNotes and go to Settings > Import & Export. 2. Pick **Joplin** as the source. 3. Drop in the file you just exported, or click to browse. 4. Check what the preview says will arrive, then start the import. --- Source: https://privacynotes.app/help/import/joplin
