# How do I add footnotes to a note? Choose **Footnote** in the + menu of the toolbar. The app adds the next number at your cursor, creates an empty footnote below the text and puts your cursor in it. You can also type `[^1]` right after a word, and start a line with `[^1]: ` to write the footnote itself. A label can be a word as well as a number. Click a number to jump to its footnote, and the back arrow or Escape takes you back to the text. On a computer, resting the pointer on a number shows the footnote in a small card. Numbers follow the order in the text, and the note saves standard Markdown footnotes, so other Markdown apps read them. An HTML export, a PDF and a burn note keep them as linked footnotes. Footnotes are free. --- Source: https://privacynotes.app/help/footnotes
