# How do I update the desktop app? You do not have to. The apps for Mac and Windows and the Linux AppImage look for an update when they start and when you come back to them, at most every 12 hours, and download it in the background. A notice then says **Update available**, with **Restart** to finish and **Changelog** to see what is new. The Linux .deb package updates through a new download: its notice offers **Download**, which opens the [downloads section](https://privacynotes.app/en#downloads), and you install the new package over the old one. A .deb that is too old to sync safely pauses sync until you do. If you installed with Scoop on Windows, run `scoop update privacynotes`, and the notice has **Copy command** for it. On a Mac, Homebrew needs no upgrade command, because the app updates itself. --- Source: https://privacynotes.app/help/desktop-updates
